Axbridge itself is a lovely place – an ancient and picturesque town with half-timbered buildings leaning into the High Street and a pretty, sociable central square. We are on the edge of the Mendips, which rise right behind the house, and the Somerset Levels begin right at the foot of the town, so walkers can be on top of the hill or half way across the Axe Valley in minutes.
What you can do and how we can help
You can simply come here and have a good time of course!
If, however, you’d like a bit more input and help from us to make your stay special, we can tailor a break to suit you. We can, for example, lay on everything from a party banquet to packed lunch, or just recommend the best places to eat and visit in our area. We can arrange guides for Bath or Wells for history, architecture or shopping trips; or source a local expert or enthusiast on the Mendip Hills or the history of the area to guide a walk. Therapists, pampering, entertainment or any experience or activity can be recommended or arranged for you.
Walkers, cyclists and birdwatchers
With the Mendip Hills right behind us, the Somerset Levels in front, and Cheddar Gorge less than 3 miles away, Number 36 is the perfect base for cycling, walking and birdwatching. We are on the Sustrans route 26, which takes in the old railway Strawberry Line, and is a lovely path for both walking and cycling. Cheddar may be is only 3 miles away, but its Gorge is not the only one in the Mendips.
We are only a 15-minute drive from the lovely Ebbor Gorge, which takes in a lovely woodland and a scramble up a tight gorge to emerge on top with a spectacular view onto the levels. Ideal for picnics if you are happy to carry them up in a backpack! A walk up Glastonbury Tor is glorious, as is the atmospheric ruin of the Abbey, and the popular and mysterious Chalice Well and garden.
People come from a great distance to see the starling ‘murmurations’: that great spectacle on the Somerset levels in Westhay which is also only 15 minutes away from the house.
We can help with recommendations or guides for all and more of these, and the perfect pubs to go with them!
